Mona and Lise walking on Vestvolden, Copenhagen
The Copenhagen fortification was initiated by the government as "Royal Resolution of April 24, 1885" and from June 1888 until September 1892, the Vestvolden was built. With its 14 km length, it was one of the world's longest continuous fortresses. As you approached the fortification, there where high jagged fences. If your horse managed to leap the fence you would then fall into a deep moat. The moats where at various levels so that you could not run a boat along the moat. This system was never used for its purpose.
